Welcome to the Information Superhighway!

★ Welcome, Partner!

Greetings, traveler of the World Wide Web! You have stumbled upon the official* home page of the Cobb Bridge Club, a small but suspiciously competitive gathering of bridge learners in beautiful Cobb, California.

Whether you have never held a bidding box or you once opened 1NT with a singleton and are still apologizing for it, you are welcome here. We are a learn-as-you-play club: low stakes, high snacks, and absolutely no judgment (out loud).

*Official according to a vote taken after dessert.

What in the World Is Bridge?

A fan of five playing cards: ace of hearts, king of spades, queen of diamonds, jack of clubs, and ten of spades.
Fig. 1: A hand. Yours is probably better.

Bridge is a card game for four players in two partnerships. You bid to decide who names the trump suit, then try to take tricks without accidentally giving away the store. It is like whist, but with more paperwork.

♠ Trump
The suit that beats everything else. Not a political statement.
♥ The dummy
One player's cards go face-up on the table. This is not a comment on their bidding. Usually.
♦ The contract
What you promised to make. See also: a binding agreement to disappoint your partner.
♣ The club
Also the place you are reading about. Confusing? Yes. Welcome to bridge.

Learn Bridge in Four Easy Bids

  1. Show up.

This is the hardest part. The rest is cards.

  2. Learn that "1 club" does not mean "let's go to the club."

It is a bid. The club is the building. The building is also a suit. Try to keep up.

  3. Take a trick by accident.

Celebrate quietly. The experts can smell fear.

  4. Come back next time.

Bring cookies. Become a regular. Win the cookie.

Bonus lesson: there is no shame in asking what just happened. There is only shame in asking the same question three Thursdays in a row. (We'll still answer.)

When & Where

Thursday nights at the Cobb Community Hall
Time What Who

Club News & Gossip

  • 11/07/2026 Website relaunched! We finally figured out this "web" thing. Please excuse the animated construction sign; it is load-bearing.
  • 10/16/2026 The Thursday night cookie roster is full through 2027. Thank you for your service.
  • 09/24/2026 We learned the Stayman convention. Nobody was hurt.
  • 08/13/2026 Lost: one red pencil. Last seen near the bidding boxes. Reward: one cookie.

Meet the Regulars

Names changed to protect the guilty. Quotes approximate. Cookies factual.

  • The Colonel

Opens 2♣ on any hand with 22 points or a good story.

  • Dot

Club treasurer, cookie chair, and the only person who knows where the extra chairs are.

  • Steve

Insists he "plays by feel." The feel is usually a finesse.

  • The Dummy

Always available. Never complains. Terrible at conversation.

The Guestbook

Marge from Pine Grove: "I came for the bridge, I stayed for the seven-layer bars."

Anonymous: "What is a squeeze?"
Webmaster: "We don't know either."

The Colonel: "Good site. Needs more trump."

A Passing Bear: "Left five stars. Would raid cooler again."

The guestbook is currently offline for maintenance. It has been offline since 1999. Please sign in person at the meetings, next to the coffee.

See you Thursday!

Bring a friend. Bring a snack. Bring your questions. Leave your singleton 1NT openings at home.
